February 16, 2022

COTABATO CITY — A bill seeking to rename the Sanga-Sanga Airport to Tawi-Tawi airport has been filed at the Bangsamoro Parliament today, February 16.

The renaming of the airport, according to the proposed measure, intends to provide its people with a sense of pride in the rich history of their land, home, and people.

Tawi-Tawi, known as the “Cradle of Islam,” the seaweed capital of the Philippines, and the carrageenan capital of the world, is rich in aquatic resources and beautiful historical sites.

In the bill’s explanatory note, the MPs emphasized that renaming the Sanga-Sanga Airport to Tawi-Tawi Airport is “only fitting and practical to showcase the treasures and beauty of the island province and give a sense of pride to its people.”

Considered the world’s gateway to the province, the said provincial airport is classified by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) as a class two principal (minor domestic) airport.

The Ministry of Transportation and Communication (MOTC) will carry out the expenses for the placement of appropriate markings and publication once the measure gets to be approved.

Authors of the proposed Parliament Bill 170 are Atty. Jose Lorena, Amilbahar Mawallil, and Al-Syed Sali. (LTAIS-Public Information, Publication, and Media Relations Division)
